Who is the Largest Employer in Nigeria Today
Talking about who is the largest employer in Nigeria today, the word “largest employer” has to do with two things, depending on whether you are looking at the public sector or the private sector. These days, people find it difficult to find a job in both the public and the private sectors. Making job seekers move in a cycle by applying for jobs over and over. Getting a job has nothing to do with the largest employer in Nigeria.
Recently, in early 2026, Nigeria’s unemployment rate has been hovering around 4.3% to 5.0%. The National Bureau of Statistics shared a report on this. However, the underemployment rate stands at approximately 12.5% to 16%. This also has to do with several million people who have jobs that don’t pay enough to live on.
The Largest Employer
The single largest employer in the public sector in Nigeria today, where thousands of people across its various Departments, Ministries, and Agencies operate, is the Federal Government of Nigeria. The Federal Government is the largest public single employer. The federal government has Ministries and agencies in all states in Nigeria, with several departments and agencies.
The state governments are not left out; they are another single largest employer in the public sector. Each state government in the 36 states have their own ministries where they operate. In May 2025, the Lagos state government reported training more than 52,000 staff members within the space of two years to improve digital competence in the workplace.
The Largest Private Sector Employer
Who is the largest employer in Nigeria today? In the private sector, one of the companies that remains undisputed is the Dangote Group. However, it is estimated to employ over 48,000 workers. Nevertheless, this number has grown pointedly with the full commencement of the Dangote Refinery operations in Lagos, Nigeria.
The Dangote Group operates in salt, flour, cement, and more, creating several job opportunities for thousands of people across the nation.
Other Key Employers
Outside the government and Dangote, which play a big role in the public and private sectors, some companies are among the largest employers in Nigeria. In the banking sector, we have the United Bank for Africa, Access Holdings, and the First Bank, each employing approximately 8,000 to 11,000 plus staff.
In the Manufacturing sectors, Flour Mills of Nigeria and Nigerian Breweries stand out as the top employers. While in Agribusiness, Olam Agri Nigeria is well recognised for its huge scope of operations in local farming. Nevertheless, MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria are not left behind in the telecommunications sector, as both play a tremendous role as key employers in the Nigerian industry.
